Contemporary Jazz Styles for the Drums - Book & CD.

In this book and CD, Retzlaff and Froman start by breaking down the components of ride-cymbal patterns and comping by providing explanations, notated samples, exercises and charts along with CD demos and play-alongs. Paralleling the historical evolution of Jazz Drumming, the authors progress into other styles & combinations of patterns, while adding new sounds & techniques.

Part I begins by introducing you to the common Jazz-drummer's vocabulary associated with Bebop, Hard Bop and Cool jazz styles that started in the mid-1940s and developed through the 1950s. Part II continues with the evolution of Bebop and straight-ahead Jazz from the 1950s into the present day.

Both aspiring and experienced drummers will benefit from this publication. They will acquire a solid foundation of techniques, historical perspective, inventive approaches to improvisation and the means to develop into a strong player with confidence.

Each style contains:
-Historial references and background
-Useful information and explanations about the vocabulary utilized
-Notated musical examples, alternative variations and exercises for the drumset
-CD tracks of demonstration performances and play-alongs
-A recommended discography, books and CDs
